- A practicing attorney from Brooklyn, New York, author Walter W. Delsarte published this book shortly after Armistice. He highlighted the effort of Black soldiers during the war and argued that their service has earned them an equal place in society. He celebrated the ideal of American democracy, while listing all of the ways in which it falls short of fulfilling its promise to African Americans.
