- Andrew J. Young and members of the Department of Education gathered the press to discuss the wide variety of summer programs available for children in Atlanta. One notable program was the Mayor's Leadership Institute, which gave interns the opportunity to gain experience working in city government and learn about the city's operations. The other agencies involved in the city programs include the city's athletic league, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army, the Boys Club of America, Morehouse College, the YMCA, the YWCA. Jim Washington, Director of the Department of Recreation and Rev. James Orange Youth Against Drugs and Violence were in attendance at the press conference.
