- Description:
- Johnnie Carr speaking at a press conference held in Montgomery, Alabama, to discuss a local fund drive launched to raise money for Rosa Parks. Carr, treasurer of the fundraising committee, explains the circumstances that led to the financial challenges Parks was facing at her home in Detroit, Michigan; stresses that, contrary to previous reports, Parks was not on welfare at the time; and pleads with local citizens to recognize their indebtedness to Parks for her bravery during the Montgomery Bus Boycott: "And further, if Mrs. Parks had the money that she would need maybe to live on, I feel that we, as people in Montgomery who are reaping the benefits of the thing that she did when she refused to get up and give her seat that day, would warrant everybody doing all that they could to let her know that we appreciate the stand that she took in 1955."
