- Description:
- Interview with Joe Reed about President Jimmy Carter's nomination of men to serve as federal judges in Alabama. The American Bar Association had deemed the two black candidates, Fred Gray and U. W. Clemon (the first African American nominees from the state), to be "unqualified." According to Reed, "When blacks are recommended, they call it a deal; when whites are recommended, they call it democracy, and I think it's all because of the fact that many folks don't want to see any black men serve as federal judges in this state."
