- Hamer and the other men and women addressed the committee. The hearings were conducted by Senators Robert F. Kennedy, Joseph S. Clark, George Murphy, and Jacob Javits; Javits and Clark are standing at the table in the background. This image was taken for (but not used in) an article ("Senators Told of Poverty" by Patricia James) and photo spread ("U.S. Senators Meet the People") that appeared on pages 1 and 3 of The Southern Courier for April 15-16, 1967.
