- After reading and discussing secondhand accounts of how the Great Depression impacted different socioeconomic groups in Alabama, the students will read four letters to Governor Benjamin Miller, requesting assistance for their families. Two are written by African American residents. The students will discuss how the content of the letters compares with the information they have already learned about the life of Alabamians during the Great Depression. The students will then write a letter back to one of the residents from the governor's perspective.
