- Begin the activity by telling students that today they will be historians and that they will work together to complete a puzzle. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Distribute one piece of the primary source photo to each group, making sure each group receives the same piece. Have students study the "puzzle piece," and if this is the first time students have examined a primary source, as them questions. Give groups another piece of the puzzle and repeat the questions. Continue until students have al pieces of the photograph. Distribute "Analyze a Photograph" worksheet to each group or student. Have groups complete the questions together. Gather and engage students in a discussion about their analysis. Spend time on the last question, "how does this photo compare to modern times?"
