- Description:
- Begin activity by passing out primary source copies to each student and read together as a class. Stop for discussion while reading the letter, allowing students to make notes on their paper. Have students work in groups to compile a list of topics discussed in the letter. Tell students that they will be completing an activity in which they will pretend as if they have just moved to a new Alabama settlement. Students' job is to write a letter back home to a friend, telling them about their journey and arrival to the settlement. Remind students to include topics discussed in Joseph Noble's letter (along with other primary source letters from early settlement in Alabama). Talk with class about the format of Noble's letter and have them make notes on their letter copy. Remind students that formatting their letter like Noble's helps it look and sound even more like an early settler!
