Description:: Show pictures of current students coming into the school. Ask the students what is going on in the pictures? How do you think the students feel coming to school? How did you feel when you came into school today? Let the students listen/see the book As Fast As Words Could Fly on Storyline Online. This gives the students a way to hear the story read by an African American male, as the character is a young African American boy. As the story is listened to or read aloud, ask the strategic questions in the attached pdf. After reading, revisit some of the questions and discuss the character traits of Mason on an anchor chart. For more background information and if time is available you can read the interview attached with the author's father, who was the basis for the story. Next go back to the pictures you showed in the opening and now bring out the primary source photos from 1963. Give background information on the photos...students integrating Alabama schools for hte first time. Now analyze the difference between the photos and using the knowledge of Mason in the book, complete a character analysis of either the boy Sonnie Hereford IV, 6 or Dorothy Bridget Davis, 16, and Henry Hobdy, 17. Compare and contrast the photos of today and of 1960s. For an extended activity, you can also compare and contrast the photo of Dorothy and Henry on September 9, 1963 being turned away and of them on September 10, 1963 without being turned away.
