- Billingsley, one of the first African Americans admitted to the Alabama State Bar, was a local political and civil rights leader. Among his more notable legal clients were Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and Caliph Washington, who was wrongfully convicted of killing a Bessemer police officer in 1957.
