- Shuttlesworth and his wife, Ruby, were there to challenge local segregation practices by waiting for their train to Atlanta in the space reserved for white and interstate passengers. They were able to travel safely to their destination, but Lamar Weaver, a white civil rights activist who had come to the station to show his support for their demonstration, was later attacked by a white crowd that had gathered outside.
