- Both women had been involved in the civil rights movement since they were children. A Klansman in the background is holding a sign that reads, "Save Our Land / Join the Klan." (The Klan members marched from Selma to Montgomery with the intention of burning a cross in front of the Capitol, but they were stopped by police outside of Montgomery.)
