- Description:
- Edward Gardner is at the front of the group, carrying a bullhorn. People are carrying signs that read, "How Great It Is Knowing We Will Be Free Some Day"; "They Are Going to 'Jail' to Make 'America' a Better Place"; and "How Great It Is Knowing We Will Be Free Some Day." On October 30, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Wyatt Tee Walker, and A. D. King flew to Birmingham from Atlanta to serve a five-day prison sentence that had been ordered during civil rights protests in 1963. (In 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that they had to serve their time in jail.)
