In October 1967, Fred Shuttlesworth, J. W. Hayes, and T. L. Fisher flew to Birmingham to serve a five-day prison sentence that had been ordered during civil rights protests in 1963. (In 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that they had to serve their time in jail.)
