- People are carrying signs that read, "While You Sacrifice in Jail We Will Mourn" and "We Mourn in Sympathy for Our Ministers." On October 30, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Wyatt Tee Walker, and A. D. King flew to Birmingham from Atlanta to serve a five-day prison sentence that had been ordered during civil rights protests in 1963. (In 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that they had to serve their time in jail.)
