- Edward Gardner and Ben "Sunshine" Owens are at the front of the group (Gardner is holding a bullhorn). People are carrying signs that read, "They Marched for Us in '63 Let Us March for Them in '67"; "They Are Going to 'Jail' to Make 'America' a Better Place"; and "They Are Going to Jail for Our Freedom." On October 30, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Wyatt Tee Walker, and A. D. King flew to Birmingham from Atlanta to serve a five-day prison sentence that had been ordered during civil rights protests in 1963. (In 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that they had to serve their time in jail.)
