- Description:
- Gray, running for a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives, received more votes than the other two candidates from his district. He lacked the majority needed to secure his nomination as the Democratic candidate, however, and narrowly lost to Bill Neville in the subsequent runoff election in June. But he was successful in 1970, when he and Thomas Reed became the first African Americans to serve in the Alabama Legislature since Reconstruction.
