- Biography:
- Marion A. Wright was born on January 18, 1894 in Johnson, South Carolina. After teaching in public schools in North Carolina, Wright returned to South Carolina and earned a law degree from the University of South Carolina. Wright championed social justice and civil rights in the South and served multiple terms as both president and vice president of the Southern Regional Council. In 1961, he endorsed a petition requesting executive clemency from President Kennedy for imprisoned civil rights activist, Carl Braden. Later, in 1967, Wright founded North Carolinians Against Death the Penalty. He died on February 14, 1983 in Crossnore, North Carolina.
