- Biography:
- Native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Wood was an African American minister and civil rights worker. From 1955 to 1958, he served as the minister of the Pond Street Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island. He left to become pastor of the Diamond Hill church in Lynchburg, Virginia. While there, he was president of the Lynchburg Improvement Association and began serving on the board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1960. From 1963 to 1970, Wood served as a minister for the Blue Hill Christian Center in Boston, Massachusetts and head of the Massachusetts Unit of SCLC.
