- Professor of philosophy at Morehouse College; pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia; president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP from 1959 until 1967; and vice president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He was also an active member of other Atlanta-area civil rights organizations, such as the Atlanta Summit Leadership Conference and the Atlanta Council on Human Relations.
