- Biography:
- Born in 1933, Sam-Joe Townsend was a graduate student at University of California, Los Angeles when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides during the summer of 1961. As part of the Freedom Ride, Townsend, along with fourteen others, rode an Illinois Central train from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where he was arrested on 30 July 1961. Townsend went on to later publish several articles and a book detailing his archaeological research before his death in 1971.
