- Biography:
- Tims was born on October 20, 1890 in Ethel, Mississippi. In 1912, he enrolled in the first class to convene on the campus of the newly established Mississippi Normal College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Tims managed the newspaper, the Free Press in Poplarville, Mississippi until he set up his own paper, the Weekly Democrat. After selling his paper in 1940, he opened a mercantile in Poplarville, which he owned and operated until 1961. Tims also owned a farm on which he grew tung oil trees and raised beef cattle. He was elected to the Poplarville City Council and served a total of 16 years as an alderman.
