- Biography:
- In 1977 Carl Stotts, an African American fire fighter in the Memphis, Tennessee, Fire Department, brought a class action lawsuit in a Federal district court. He alleged that the department and various city officials had engaged in discriminatory hiring and promotion proactices in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
