- The first African American mayor of a major American city (Cleveland, Ohio 1968-1972). Stokes was the first African American news anchorman in New York city. A lawyer, he represented the United Autoworkers (1980-1983), became a municipal judge (1983-1994), and served as a United States Ambassador to the Seychelles.
