- Catherine Slade was married to James Slade, the second African American to attend medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1965, after graduating and become a pediatrician, the family moved to Edenton, North Carolina, where for many years, James Slade was the only African American physician in the community.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
