- Biography:
- A graduate of Piedmont College in Demorest with a Ph.B. degree in 1930 and of the University of Georgia with an M.A. degree in 1936, Claude Lamar Purcell did postgraduate work at Peabody College and Columbia University and received his law degree from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta in 1960. He worked as a teacher in the Habersham County Schools for three years and then as the system's superintendent from January 1, 1933 to November 1, 1942. He began his career at the Georgia State Department of Education on November 1, 1942. He would serve as the State School Superintendent from January 13, 1958 until his resignation on December 31, 1965.
