Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Joseph Marion Pratt was a nineteen year old student at San Franciso State College when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides. As part of the Freedom Ride Pratt rode on the Illinois Central Railroad from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where he was arrested with nearly a dozen others on 20 June 1961.
