Biography:

Born in San Francisco, California in 1917, Jean Estil Kidwell Pestana was an attorney in Los Angeles, California when she was arrested for her participation in the Freedom Rides during the summer of 1961. As part of the Freedom Ride, Pestana, along with nearly a dozen others, rode a Greyhound bus from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where she was arrested on July 15, 1961. Pestana later went on to represent members of the Friends of the Black Panther Party in 1969.
