- Peacock, Wazir; civil rights activist, social reformer; born 05 September 1937 in Charleston, Mississippi, United States; pre-med major at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi; graduate studies at Tuskegee Institute; joined students seeking to desegregate the Holly Springs movie theater; worked on voter registration in Marshall County with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); recruited to do voter registration work in the Mississippi Delta; opposed the Freedom Summer project, which brought outside volunteers into Mississippi (1964); arrested outside Columbus, Mississippi, jailed, and severely beaten (1964); conducted voter registration work in Selma and Macon County, Alabama; hemodialysis technician at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (1970); worked with developmentally disabled children and adults at the Stepping Stones Growth Center in California (1989))--African American National Biography
