Biography:

Kojo Nantambu was originally named Roderick Kirby but changed his name in 1972. He was one of several African American students bused to white suburban high schools in Wilmington, North Carolina, who upon arrival found himself surrouned by hostility and resentment. He later became a leader in the 1971 racial turmoil in the city which began with a sit-in in response to the school boar's prohibition of a memorial service on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
