- Biography:
- John Broadus Mitchell was born in Georgetown, Kentucky, in 1892 into a family with roots in religion and education. His father was a history professor, and both parents were involved in the community and had liberal political leanings. Mitchell grew up in Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina. He became an economic historian and taught at Johns Hopkins University, Occidental College, and New York University before finding a tenured position in the economics department at Rutgers University. Mitchell was involved in leftist politics and in the 1950s participated in a movement at Rutgers to combat McCarthyism in academia.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
