- Biography:
- African American, Vassar College graduate from Cincinnati, Ohio who worked as a SNCC field secretary in Canton, Mississippi beginning in November 1963. Police arrested and charged Merritt with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly asking a girl to distribute voter registration leaflets. Tried in February 1964, Merritt was convicted of disturbing the peace and libel and was sentenced to six months concurrently and fined $1000.
