- A native of Washington, D.C. and NAG activist, as a nineteen-year old Howard University student, William Carl Mahoney joined the Freedom Ride from Nashville to Jackson, Mississippi in Montgomery, Alabama on May 28, 1961. In 1969, he would publish the novel Black Jacob.
