- Tom Ludwig, born in Arkansas in 1919, joined the Highlander Folk School staff in early 1946. He had organized a student workers' association and worked as a machinist, longshoreman, and CIO organizer while attending the University of California at Berkeley. During World War II he taught vocational counseling at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia, encouraging African American soldiers or those with union backgrounds to lead discussions on the difficulties facing returning veterans. After being discharged from the Army he chose to work with the folk school to organize farmers, establish cooperatives, and secure credit for Farmers' Union members instead of pursuing graduate study in Europe.
