- "The Reverend Michael A. King was born in 1959 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and attended Dudley High School, where he was elected student council president. He briefly attended Guilford College and John Wesley College before leaving to pastor Garden of Prayer Sovereign Baptist Church. King served on the Greensboro City School Board from 1984 to 1986. In 1991, he helped establish Project Homestead, a provider of affordable housing. From 1993 to 1998, he served on the Guilford County Board of Social Services. King also led the George C. Simkins Memorial Political Action Committee and was a member of the Pulpit Forum. King was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, given by the governor, and was named NAACP Man of the Year. In September 2003, King resigned as president and CEO of Project Homestead amid allegations of mishandling tax-payer contributions.
