- "Leroy Johnson, from Atlanta, served in the Georgia Senate from 1963-75, and was the first black state senator in Georgia since the Reconstruction era."--Inventory of an oral history interview with Leroy Johnson, October 17, 1991, Georgia Government Documentation Project, Georgia State University Library. Mr. Johnson graduated from Morehouse College and Atlanta University and earned his law degree from North Carolina Central University. He taught social science in the Atlanta school system from 1950-1954 and in 1957 became the first African American hired by the Fulton County Solicitor General's office. He also served as advisor to Atlanta's civil rights movement in the 1960s, was a candidate for mayor of Atlanta in 1973, and was active in community affairs.
