- Born in Houston, Texas, Edward B. Johnson was a student at the University of Texas when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides. Johnson was arrested in the Illinois Central terminal in Jackson, Mississippi on 9 July 1961 after he and eight others participated in a Freedom Ride from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi.
