- Biography:
- "James L. Hicks was born in Akron, Ohio on May 9, 1915. He attended the University of Akron and Howard. In 1935 he got his first job in journalism as a reporter in Cleveland for a publication called Call and Post. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private, and while serving he earned three battle stars and was promoted to captain. After his time in the army, Hicks became the Washington Bureau Chief for the National Negro Press Association. From 1955 to 1966 and then again from 1972-1977 he was the editor of the Amsterdam News. In between his stints as the editor of the Amsterdam News, Hicks was a public relations officer for the National Urban League. In 1977, Hicks was named editor of the New York Voice. He died in Manhattan on January 19, 1986...While working at the Amsterdam News, Hicks covered the Emmett Till case. He also reported on the desegregation efforts in Little Rock, Arkansas and Oxford, Mississippi."--Eyes on the Prize Interviews, biography, Washington University in Saint Louis.
