Appeared daily radio show SKVD, Los Angeles; recorded Dust Bowl ballads Victor Records, 1940, others; with Pete Seeger, Lee Hays and Millard Lampell started the Almanac Singers, Greenwich Village, 1941; wrote, distributed song book, On a Slow Train Through California; performed picket lines, migratory camps, dance concert halls, U.S. radio, B.B.C., Army camps, union halls; performed and travelled with Franklin D. Roosevelt Band Wagon; wrote 26 songs for Bonneville Power Adminstrn., 1941. Served with U.S. Merchant Marine, 1942-45, USAF, 1945-46.
