- Biography:
- Joanne Gavin was born July 19, 1932 in Denver, Colorado. Gavin grew up in southern California and attended the 1963 March on Washington. Following the March on Washington, Gavin volunteered in the SNCC Washington, D.C. office and eventually became a SNCC staff member. In July 1964, Gavin took a bus to Jackson, Mississippi to work as a COFO volunteer where she remained active in the civil rights movement until 1971. While in Jackson, Gavin worked as a secretary at Tougaloo College and wrote under the pen name Cordelia Nikkalaos.
