- "Shirley Taylor Frye was born in Fremont, North Carolina, and was an honors graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in 1953. She received her master's degree from Syracuse University in psychology and special education. Frye served as president of the Greensboro YWCA in 1969 and as chair of the Human Relations Advisory Committee, which addressed parent concerns about court-ordered busing in Greensboro. She was a member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce in the early 1970s. Frye also participated in the State Department of Public Instruction's survey concerning gifted children and served as special education coordinator for Bennett College for four years. She later worked with Greensboro's Direction Services, where she placed children whose needs were not being met in better environments. She also served as an officer in the Sir Walter Cabinet. Frye most recently served as the vice president of community relations for WFMY News 2. In addition, she is a member of the Greater Greensboro United Way, for which she chaired the Board of Directors in 2003. Shirley Frye married Henry E. Frye in 1956. He was the first African American elected to the N.C. state legislature in the twentieth century and the first to become Chief Justice of the N.C.
