Frierson, Dargan
- Biography:
- "Dargan Frierson, native of South Carolina, graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1942 and then entered the United States Air Corps. In 1946, he left the Air Corps and returned to USC to finish law school. In 1947, Frierson became an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He received his initial training in Washington, D.C., and was then posted in Cleveland. From 1949 to 1951, he was stationed in Detroit, and in 1951 was transferred to FBI office in Greensboro, where he remained until 1971. Frierson's first assignments in Greensboro were routine criminal investigations and investigations on government employment applicants. Around 1958, he was assigned to the Ku Klux Klan. Frierson developed relationships within the Klan, established informants who could keep him aware of the Klan's plans, attended rallies, and spoke face-to-face with members, including the Grand Dragon. Frierson was responsible for monitoring the Klan from 1958 until about 1966, when shifted his focus to the Black Panthers, an organization especially popular on the campus of N.C. A&T University. In addition to these other assignments, Frierson also monitored the marches, protests, and demonstrations in downtown Greensboro during the civil rights movement in the early 1960s.
