- "Representative from Georgia; born in Griffin, Spalding County, Ga., November 8, 1914; attended the public schools and Georgia Military Academy (now the Woodward Academy); A.B., University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., 1936; United States Army, 1936-1937, 1941-1945; United States Army Reserve; attended Emory University Law School in 1937 and 1938; graduated from George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C., 1940; lawyer, private practice; assistant United States attorney for northern district of Georgia, 1939-1941,1945 and 1946; member of the Georgia state house of representatives,1947-1948; solicitor general for Griffin Judicial Circuit, 1949-1954; president, Georgia Bar Association, 1953-1954; delegate, Georgia State Democratic conventions, 1946, 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, and 1966; delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1960 and 1968; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress, by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative A. Sidney Camp and at the same time was elected to the Eighty-fourth Congress; reelected to the eleven succeeding Congresses (November 2, 1954-January 3, 1979); chair, Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (Ninety-fourth and Ninety-fifth Congresses); was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninety-sixth Congress in 1978; resumed the practice of law and farming operations; engaged in banking and real estate; died on June 24, 2007, in Griffin, Ga."--Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, accessed Feb. 5, 2008.
