- Chandrika Dalal immigrated to the United States from India, settling first in California where she worked in her brother's hotel busines. Dalal, her family, and her brother later relocated to North Carolina. She blames police harassment and punitive city codes for preventing her from earning a livelihood as a restaurateur, so she found work at the University of North Carolina as a housekeeper.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
