- Biography:
- As a recent graduate from Harvard, Cowan served as a Freedom Summer volunteer in Batesville, Mississippi and a year later, co-founded the civil rights newspaper, the Southern Courier. He graduated from Yale Law in 1968 and co-founded the Center for Law and Social Policy. Cowan taught at UCLA for twenty years and also joined the Center for Law in the Public Interest in Los Angeles. He served as the director of the Voice of America during the Clinton presidency and became the dean of the University of Southern California's Annenberg School in 1996.
