- Biography:
- Rebecca Clayton grew up in Madison County, Virginia, during the 1940s and 1950s in a family that valued education. She earned her degree in education from Longwood College, 1958-1960, in Prince Edward County, Virginia where she witnessed the public schools closing and mounting pressure to desegregate. During the 1960s, Clayton relocated to Durham, North Carolina, and worked briefly at Duke University. In 1970, she returned to teaching, initially working as a substitute teacher in the Durham school district before moving into a permanent position.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
