- "Reverend Howard A. Chubbs was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in February 1936. He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and enrolled at Tennessee State University, from which he graduated in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Following graduation, Chubbs moved to Chicago to join his family and found work as a mail carrier. He later worked as a social worker assisting the elderly for approximately two years. Chubbs left Chicago in 1959 and moved to Richmond, Virginia, to attend seminary at Virginia Union University. There, A.D. Price, a member of a prominent African American family, served as a mentor to Chubbs and introduced him to the city's African American elites, including his future wife. While living in Richmond, Chubbs observed sit-ins participated in a picket line. In 1966, Rev. Chubbs became pastor at the Providence Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina. Upon arriving, the Chubbs were welcomed to the city by the Minister's Fellowship, an integrated organization comprised of local pastors, rabbis, and priests. Two years later, Chubbs became its president. Rev. Chubbs also served on the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Redevelopment Commission. Chubbs chaired the Chancellor Search Committee of North Carolina A&T State University, and has served on its board of trustees.
