Biography:

Rita J. Carter was an eighteen year old student at Oakland City College in Oakland, California when she was arrested for her participation in the Freedom Rides. As part of the Freedom Ride Carter rode on the Illinois Central Railroad from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi where she was arrested with nearly a dozen others on 20 June 1961.
