- Biography:
- As a twenty-two year old American Baptist Theological Seminary student, Carter participated in a Freedom Ride from Nashville, Tennessee (via Birmingham, Alabama) to Montgomery, Alabama from May 17 to 21, 1961. Carter also took part in the ride from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi on May 24, 1961. He was arrested in Jackson on the 24th. He, James Bevel, Bernard Lafayette, and Samuel Collier formed the Nashville Quartet, a group that wrote and performed freedom songs.
