- Born in Chicago, Illinois, James T. Carey was living in Berkeley, California and serving as President of the Catholic Interracial Council when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides during the summer of 1961. As part of the Freedom Ride, Carey, along with eight others, was arrested in the airport in Jackson, Mississippi on 21 July 1961.
